Why You Need a Website for Your Creative Business

Episode 8

Why you need a website for your business

Let’s be honest- we were all caught off guard when Instagram and Facebook went down last week. Most of us flipped our shiz and worried about our businesses, as many of our sales are made on social media. Now, this isn’t the first time social media has gone down. We all remember the great youtube crash of 2018.

So what are you going to do when social media fails again when it comes to your business? You need a way to stay in contact with clients and to drive sales, without having to directly do it yourself.

That’s why you need a website.

Websites are a great way to grab new clients, share more about your brand than you can on social media, and offer things that grab the attention of others- like a blog (or a podcast hehe).

Now, there’s some different routes that you can take when it comes to a website. The first is to build it yourself. This would include spending many of your hours behind a laptop screen tweaking fonts, colors and layouts. The DIY route is good for the creative who doesn’t have a lot of money to spend on a designer or a lot of tech experience.

If you’re looking to take that route, we suggest building your site on either Wix or Squarespace. Both builders are drag and drop which is the designer term for easy to use. I have personally used both, but found Squarespace to be a better overall experience. Wix is great for experimenting, but not so great for growth.

The second route is to hire a designer- like me- to design your site. This route can and will cost a bit more than doing it yourself, but in the end you'll end up with an amazing website! These sites are more than likely built on Squarespace, Showit, or Wordpress. All of my client sites are built on Squarespace, as it’s easier for you to maintain on your own later on. Others use Wordpress or Showit. Both are great platforms.

When should you hire a designer, you ask?

The answer: When you want an elaborate website but don't have the skills or time to diy, want integrations that work for your business, and/or when you want a unique site just not just a customized template.
