From Fandom to Fame- How People Built Business Out of Fandoms
What is a fandom?
According to the English Oxford Living Dictionary, a fandom is “the fans of a particular person, team, fictional series, etc. regarded collectively as a community or subculture.” These groups, usually connected through social platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr, will rally around one another and support each other unconditionally, like a large internet family. Fandoms can be for everything from music to books, tv shows to movies.
Many people are involved in fandoms, especially Millennials and GenZers. Some of the biggest fandoms are the Potterheads (Harry Potter), Superwholock (Supernatural, Doctor Who and Sherlock), and the Beyhive (Beyoncé).
Fandoms can be casual, or they can be scary. One of the most notorious scary fandoms is the Directioners. The One Direction fandom actually hacked into old records and found the band members’ blood types, then proceeded to share them on Twitter. Terrifying, right? They also leaked things like their dick sizes, ultrasounds and phone numbers.
Do not freight, most fandoms aren’t that scary, and don’t go that extreme. Most share theories, fanfctions (stories written about the fandom), ideas and edits.
People who have made Fandoms into their businesses
Yes, you read that right. The 50 Shades of Grey author actually built her entire book empire off of a fandom. Before it was picked up by a publisher, 50 Shades was actually a Twilight fanfiction. Surprise! Bet you didn’t know that! She went on to have a best selling series and movie franchise!
Similarly to E.L. James, Anna’s empire started with After, a Harry Styles fanfiction on Wattpad. Ever wonder why Hardin Scott sounded so familiar? Harry Styles. She went on to write 4 more books and the first book has been adapted into a film, which is being released April 12th. Watch the Trailer below.
Ah, Luna Lovegood. Before she got the role of Luna, Evanna was a fan of the series. After Order of the Phoenix was released, she was hospitalized for an eating disorder, and her family got into contact with the publisher, getting her a signed copy of the book. She went on to talk to JK Rowling before being cast as Lovegood.
Frank Gioia (CrankThatFrank):
Frank, also known as CrankThatFrank, grew his youtube channel of the same name to over 680,000 subscribers by creating videos about his love for pop punk, namely My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco.
